🐫🌍 Argument for the breeding of large camelids in France and Europe! 🌟🐪
Together, for a better future with our animals 🌈
📜 Presented by the FFC and written by Bernard Faye 🖋️
A part of the general public wonders about the interest and the conditions of breeding large camelids in France and more widely in Europe. This document aims to answer these legitimate questions by drawing on knowledge of the biology and physiology of these species, as well as on the experience of camel breeders established in our country.

🐫 Camel or dromedary? 🐪
First of all, it should be remembered that there are two species of "large camelids" that differ in their geographical origin: (i) the one-humped camel, commonly called dromedary, originating from the Middle East; (ii) the two-humped camel, called Bactrian, originating from Central Asia.
🤔 The distinction between dromedary and camel therefore has no meaning, because dromedary and Bactria are both "camels" (genus Camelus).*

🌍 Camels are not adapted to our climates in France: True or false?** ☀️❄️
🤨 TRUE AND FALSE at the same time...
It is true that camels originally live in deserts, but since conditions in France and Europe are generally more favorable, camels adapt perfectly. Their longevity is also higher there, and the health pressure is much lower.
---
❄️🌧️ Camels fear the cold: True or false?☀️
🤔 FALSE...
Camels are characterized by a very wide range of thermal comfort. They can withstand temperatures ranging from 5 to 35°C, and in Central Asia, they cope very well with snow and extreme cold.
---
💧🌦️ Camels Fear Humidity: True or False? ☔
🤔 TRUE...
Humidity is uncomfortable for them. Camels do not like rain, but they are not afraid of water and can even swim.
---
🌾🌱 Food in France can't suit them: True or false?🍏🌿
🤨 FALSE...
On the contrary, the fodder in France or in Europe is on average richer and more appetizing than the vegetation of the desert. Camels are very happy with fallow land invaded by brambles and shrubs.
---
🚑🌍 Camels raised outside their countries of origin are at risk of catching many diseases: True or false?💉🦠
🤨 FALSE...
Most of the diseases to which camels are susceptible in the deserts do not exist in France or are well controlled. The network of veterinarians in France and Europe ensures good health protection.
---
🏇🏽🐫 Camels are not made to run: True or false?🏃♂️
🤔 FALSE...
Running is second nature, especially to the dromedary. Camels are capable of running long distances, which is part of their natural abilities.
---
👜🐫 **Camels suffer when carrying loads: True or false?** 💪🐪
🤨 FALSE...
A camel can easily carry 150 to 300 kg on its back, provided the load is suitable. The equipment used by breeders in Europe is designed to avoid unnecessary injuries.
---
🛣️🐫 Forcing camels to squat on hard surfaces like tarmac is cruelty: True or false?🚫🐾
🤨 FALSE...
The camel has special pads and calluses that allow it to crouch on hard surfaces without injury. This is a natural and non-abusive position.
---
👁️💦 The camel often has urine-soiled hind limbs and tears in its eyes, a sign of mistreatment: True or false?😢💦
🤨 FALSE...
Wet legs are an adaptation to heat, and tears are natural mechanisms to adapt to dryness and protect against infection.
---
🤝🐫 Camels are not used to the presence of a crowd: True or false?** 🤔👥
🤨 FALSE...
Camels, well tamed from a young age, enjoy the company of humans. The more interactions they have, the less stress they suffer.

Together, let's build a future where the breeding of large camelids contributes to the well-being of these magnificent animals! 🌐🐫
